While the macroscopic appearance of a historical flag or fabric offers initial clues, definitive historical verification requires looking beneath the surface. Through high-magnification microscopy, we isolate the cellular structures of flax bundles, evaluate the twist of hand-spun wool, and identify diagnostic manufacturing markers like early industrial lock-stitching. By documenting these precise physical characteristics, this open-access resource provides collectors, researchers, and textile historians with the rigorous, objective data needed to accurately date artifacts and preserve American material culture.
